"EAST-WEST STUDIES" is a peer-reviewed Journal of Social Sciences of Tallinn University’s School of Governance, Law and Society. It was established in 2007 and has since published one issue annually. Every published article undergoes a double-blind peer-review process before being accepted for publication. The journal is open for submission for scholars from around the world and all social sciences disciplines; the international editorial board consists of respected academics from Estonian and international universities.

We are excited to announce the launch of the journal’s brand-new website—a significant step forward in our commitment to accessibility, security, and user experience. The redesigned platform is cleaner and more intuitive.

This first issue of a new series of East-West studies presents the proceedings of the international conference held at the University of Tallinn on 28 and 29 October 2021. The conference was titled Still a Cold Monster? Rise and Decline of Modern State, and it was sponsored by SOGOLAS, the School of Society, Governance and Law of the University of Tallinn. The topic discussed was the role of the state in an increasingly privatised, globalised and digitalised society. In the last thirty years, national societies have been undergone profound transformations.
