Use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools

26.03.2026

STSS values authenticity in scientific research, therefore we do not encourage use of AI for any purpose in the article preparation or review process. If the author or reviewer decides to use AI tools despite this guidance, the following principles apply. Failure to comply with these principles will result in immediate rejection of the manuscript if discovered.

For authors

The STSS policy on AI use in manuscripts is based on three core principles:

  • Authorship - AI cannot be listed as an author and should not be used for generating arguments and scientific insights, writing analysis or drawing conclusions.
  • Accountability - Authors bear full responsibility for the paper's content, including ethical and copyright considerations, as well as the overall integrity and accuracy of the work.
  • Disclosure – Upon submission, authors must disclose any use of AI tools, specifying the tool, its purpose, and the sections of the paper where it was applied.

This disclosure should be included after the biographical statements and before the acknowledgments, using the following template:

During the preparation of this paper the author(s) used [NAME TOOL / SERVICE] in [NAME PART OF THE PAPER] for [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for the content of the publication.

For reviewers

The STSS policy on AI use in reviews is based on three core principles:

  • Accountability - The reviewer bears full responsibility for the content of the review report. Reviewers must not use AI tools to evaluate the intellectual content of the paper or to generate substantive parts of their review.
  • Confidentiality - Under no circumstances should reviewers upload the entire paper or any part of it to any artificial intelligence tool as this may compromise the authors' privacy and infringe on their property rights.
  • Disclosure - Upon submission, reviewers must disclose any use of AI tools, specifying the tool and the purpose it was used for.

During the preparation of this review the reviewer used [NAME TOOL / SERVICE] for [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the reviewer reviewed and edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for the content of the review.
