Abstract
Magnus vir cecidit: "a truly great man has passed away". The epic incipit of Prof. Holland's obituary written on the spur of Feodor Martens' untimely death in June 1909 duly reflects the heroic status of the celebrated Russian internationalist among his contemporaries.
